How Does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Work?

February 10, 2024

Aging affects the eye area in many ways. Your eyelid skin becomes thinner, letting fat pads show through, creating a puffy appearance. This skin can also sag, resulting in wrinkles and a tired appearance. This sagging, puffy skin can even block your vision and keep you from enjoying a full field of view.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is performed to correct aesthetic and functional issues with your eyelids. You may have the procedure for either or both of these reasons. Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids. The procedure usually takes two hours or less, and you can return home after a short observation period.

How Does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Work?

Your Heart of Texas Eye Center surgeon will perform blepharoplasty by making an incision hidden in an eyelid crease or inside the eyelid. They will lift and tighten the skin, remove any excess, and remove or reposition fat pads to reduce the appearance of puffiness. If loose skin or fat obscures your vision, your surgeon will carefully lift this excess tissue so you can see better.

What Can Blepharoplasty Treat?

Many people have blepharoplasty for functional reasons. Visual impairment due to sagging skin should not hold you back from fully enjoying your activities. Removing this loose skin can correct a problem you did not even realize you had and let you see what you have been missing. Eyelid surgery can also address aesthetic issues such as:

  • Eyelid wrinkles
  • Puffiness
  • Undereye bags
  • Sagging eyelids
  • Visual obstruction

An eyelid lift can be combined with other treatments like dermal fillers or Botox® to achieve a relaxed, youthful appearance. Discuss your concerns and goals with your eye surgeon during your consultation.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

You may experience some swelling and bruising around your eyes for a few days after the procedure. Most people return to work in a week or less. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions. You may have a few sutures, which your surgeon will remove at a follow-up visit. You should see your full results when the swelling has faded completely after a few weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is an excellent option for those who have loose eyelid skin that obscures their field of vision. Good candidates may also want to improve the appearance of their eye area. Candidates should be in overall good health and have no serious eye conditions. Blepharoplasty can have a positive effect on your life by widening your field of vision and eliminating sagging skin.

Dr. Dudek and her team were absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. My LASIK procedure was fast, safe, professional, and I felt extremely confident with them from start to finish. I could not recommend them enough, LASIK is a no brainer.
