What Causes Open-Angle Glaucoma?
Open-angle glaucoma is caused by pressure build-up in the eye. This build-up can gradually occur when the eye no longer drains fluid properly, which can cause harm to the optic nerve and result in vision loss. Glaucoma has no cure; however, there are treatment options available to manage it.
In the early stages of open-angle glaucoma, most patients do not experience any changes in vision or other noticeable symptoms. Diagnosing glaucoma in its early stages is essential to preserving vision. With regular eye exams, you can detect glaucoma even if you have no symptoms and take the necessary steps to treat it. In the later stages of glaucoma, you may begin to experience symptoms such as blurry vision and blind spots in your peripheral vision.
You may be at higher risk of developing glaucoma if you are:
- Over 40
- Have a family history of glaucoma
- Farsighted or nearsighted
- Have high intraocular pressure
- Have sustained an eye injury
- Have diabetes
- Have high blood pressure
- Have migraines
- Are of African, Hispanic, or Asian descent
What is Durysta® and How Does it Work?
Durysta® is an innovative, FDA-approved treatment that lowers intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Durysta® is a dissolvable, preservative-free implant that releases medication to lower eye pressure over time.
Your physician will carefully place the implant in your eye during your appointment. Only one implant needs to be administered per eye. The implant is small and lasts for about one year. After treatment, you may experience eye redness, light sensitivity, or blurry vision, but this is normal and should fade. What to Expect During Durysta® Treatment
Durysta® is a convenient treatment that offers long-lasting relief from glaucoma with just one treatment and doesn’t need to be used daily like eye drops. Your Heart of Texas eye doctor will carefully place the tiny implant in each eye. This is a quick, easy procedure to insert the implant into the anterior chamber of the eye with a special applicator. No anesthesia is needed, and the implant won’t need to be removed since it dissolves over time.
Once the Durysta® implants are inserted, they will gradually release medication as they dissolve. Its effects typically last several months.
Recovery Timeline for Durysta®
Treatment with Durysta® involves one simple procedure to insert the implants, which will then automatically administer medication to your eyes for months. You won’t need any downtime after receiving Durysta®.
Who Can Have Durysta®?
Patients with open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure who find it difficult to remember to take or have trouble administering eye drops may be good candidates for Durysta®. Patients may not be suitable for treatment if they have an eye infection, Fuchs’ dystrophy, have had a corneal transplant, or are allergic to any of the ingredients in Durysta®.
