Meet Our Staff

Get to know the wonderful staff at Heart of Texas Eye Care! Each member brings a unique perspective and experience to our team, as well as a passion and dedication to eye care and curating an exceptional patient experience.

Marisa,
Calvin & Trish

“Welcome to Heart of Texas Eye Care! My name is Marisa. How may I assist you today?”

The primary focus of our team members in this role is to make your visit as comfortable and efficient as possible. From scheduling appointments, greeting you as you arrive, processing insurance benefits, and helping you check out after your appointment, our PCCs are ready to facilitate activities between the patients and the clinical team. If you have a question, they are eager to assist or will direct it to the appropriate team member.

Amelia,
Erica & Monica

“Hello! My name is Amelia. I am a technician who will be doing some preliminary testing to get you ready for your visit with the doctor. Follow me!”

These specialized healthcare professionals are skilled at testing and measuring the eye. During your time with them, you will observe them recording clinical data, such as the reason for your appointment, what you are noticing with your eyes and vision, as well as measurements, scans, and tests. Instilling eye drops are also part of their job when a patient workup requires this. They also assist the doctor with office-based procedures, process refills, and triage clinical questions passed on from our PCCs.

Vanesa

“Hello! My name is Vanesa, and I will be assisting the doctor in recording the clinical information of your visit today.”

Unlike our other team members, who work more independently, our ophthalmic scribe works closely with our doctors during the patient visit. Their main role is to record the exam information, diagnoses, and treatment planning. Our scribe sends out prescriptions, initiates referrals to other specialists, and facilitates communication back to our PCCs for follow-up or annual visits. During downtimes, you will find them responding to patient clinical questions that are communicated by the doctor, managing prior authorizations, and managing refill requests.

Melissa

“Hello! My name is Melissa, and I manage patient accounts.”

Like most medical practices, Heart of Texas Eye Care accepts insurance payments for our services, provided we are networked with a given plan. We also accept cash payments for services that do not fall within the scope of the insurance plan or if there is no insurance plan. Our billing specialist, Melissa, processes the insurance claims, credits patient accounts for payments, sends out statements for balances due, processes insurance denials, and issues refunds for overpayment. If you ever have a question about your bill, Melissa is well-equipped to help you understand your benefits, insurance plan, service payments, and what balance you might owe.

Erica

“So you are a candidate for eye surgery? My name is Erica, and I am going to assist you every step of the way.”

Ophthalmology is a surgical specialty, so we hire team members who focus on assisting patients with the surgical journey. If you are recommended for surgery, especially a surgery that will be performed at an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), you will meet our surgery coordinator. This role has many facets, and it will surprise you how easy it looks. Our surgery coordinator will:

  • Assist the doctor in confirming the surgical plan
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of the surgical options
  • Confirm that appropriate testing is completed for the doctor and ready for surgical planning
  • Review cost estimates and how they relate to insurance benefits
  • Review and facilitate the signing of the informed consent forms
  • Schedule the surgery appointment(s) at the ASC
  • Send orders and health history information to the ASC
  • Order post-operative medications
  • Review pre-operative and post-operative instructions
  • Schedule post-operative appointments.

Ryan functions as the patient’s advocate and point of contact for all surgical planning.

Lisa (Four) Gutierrez

I make every effort to keep the practice running smoothly.”

Lisa has been a member of the Heart of Texas Eye Care team for over five years. When she first joined the team, she was hired as a PCC and was the friendly face, greeting patients and assisting patients over the phone. As she assimilated, she quickly demonstrated strong leadership qualities that promoted her to a surgery coordinator role, followed by a role as an office manager. She is now our Practice Administrator.

Lisa has excelled in supporting her staff and team when they need assistance, monitoring the workload, and pitching in when needed. As the practice administrator, she spearheads projects for improvements, manages problems, and monitors the practice’s marketing, purchasing, hiring, and regulatory compliance. Her leadership has been invaluable in creating a work culture that is collaborative and rewarding.
