Learn more about Eye Exams

What are Eye Exams?

An eye exam is a thorough examination of the eye using several tests to evaluate patients’ vision and check for eye diseases. An eye exam can test for several conditions, including glaucoma, keratoconus, age-related macular degeneration, and Fuchs’ Dystrophy. Eye exams can also provide a baseline for patients and be useful in monitoring eye conditions and overall eye health over time. Regular eye exams are essential for children and patients who wear glasses, use contact lenses, have risk factors for certain eye conditions, or are over 40.

How Can I Benefit From Eye Exams?

An eye exam can uncover underlying conditions you may not have been aware of or determine if you need to adjust your glasses or contact lens prescription. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions can be beneficial in maintaining vision and eye health, which is why we recommend patients schedule regular eye exams.

Benefits of eye exams include:

  • Provide a baseline for the eye and monitor changes
  • Detect eye diseases and eye conditions
  • Improve overall health and quality of life

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

During a regular eye exam, we may ask you questions about your health and any family history of eye diseases. There are a few tests we may perform to check the health of your eye, all of which are painless. We may also recommend further screening for patients with certain conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Visual Activity

During this assessment, your physician will measure your visual acuity. They will ask that you read letters off a chart at a distance. Your physician or technician will also perform an eye muscle test, refraction assessment, and a visual field test. These tests will help determine if you require vision correction, such as contact lenses or glasses, or need an update to your prescription.

Glaucoma Screening

At Heart of Texas Eye Care, we perform glaucoma screenings for all patients during their regular eye exams. We accomplish this by doing a tonometry test, which is a test that measures intraocular pressure, or pressure in the eye. If you meet the additional screening criteria, we will recommend you come in for a glaucoma workup.

Slit Lamp Examination

A slit lamp examination is a test that uses a slit lamp, which is a microscope with a bright light. During this test, your physician will shine the light in your eye to evaluate the front structures of the eyes such as the eyelids, conjunctiva, sclera, and cornea. They may apply dilating eye drops to your eyes to examine the retina and optic nerve.

Should I Have Regular Eye Exams?

Yearly eye examinations are essential, even for individuals who are not experiencing problems. Many diseases affecting the eye are asymptomatic in their early stages, meaning you will not experience any symptoms of the condition. In many cases, early detection and treatment of these issues will prevent vision loss.

Only by visiting an eye doctor and having a thorough examination can you discover these issues. As we age, eye and vision problems become more prevalent and occur more often. Having the eyes examined thoroughly on a yearly basis can improve your overall health and quality of life.
