What is Blepharoplasty?
August 1, 2024
The effects of aging and environmental exposures such as UV light can lead to thinner eyelid skin with less elasticity. You may notice concerns like drooping, wrinkles, and undereye bags that can make you look tired, and loose skin can even affect your vision. Blepharoplasty restores your tighter, smoother eyelids so you look energized and youthful.

What is Blepharoplasty?
Also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty is performed for functional and aesthetic reasons. It can treat the upper lids, lower lids, or both to rejuvenate the eye area and correct signs of aging. While many plastic surgeons perform blepharoplasty, your Heart of Texas Eye Care surgeons are specialists in eye anatomy and provide refreshed, natural-looking results.
An eye surgeon may perform blepharoplasty if you have sagging excess skin that blocks part of your vision. You may also have the procedure to address:
- Lines and wrinkles
- Puffiness
- Undereye bags
- Drooping lids
An eyelid lift can be performed alone or combined with non-surgical treatments such as Botox®, which excels at smoothing crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of the eyes) or glabellar lines (wrinkles between the brows). Your eye surgeon will discuss all your options during your consultation.
How is an Eyelid Lift Performed?
You will be awake during your procedure but will receive medication to keep you relaxed and comfortable. The length of the surgery depends on whether you have your upper lids, lower lids, or both treated. Your surgeon makes incisions hidden in the creases of your eyelids to tighten loose skin and underlying structures. They will also remove or reposition fat to smooth puffiness and correct eye bags.

What is Recovery Like After Blepharoplasty?
Most people experience some swelling and bruising around the eye area after their blepharoplasty. You will receive aftercare instructions, including how to care for your incisions and how to use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated is recommended while you heal, and you must avoid rubbing your eyes or using contacts.
Limit strenuous activities such as swimming or running until your surgeon clears you to return to them. You should also wear tinted UV-protection sunglasses to protect your healing skin. Continuing to protect your eyes from the sun over time will help prolong your eyelid lift results.
Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty can help almost all healthy adults remove excess skin that affects their vision or improve the appearance of the eye area. Good candidates are nonsmokers with realistic expectations and no serious eye conditions. You should not have this procedure if you are pregnant, have a medical condition that would affect your healing, or cannot take the necessary time to recover.
