What is Blepharoplasty and How Does It Work?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that addresses excess skin and weakened muscles in the eyelids to enhance the appearance of the eyes and improve vision. As we age, the eyelids lose their elasticity, and the supporting tissues begin to weaken. In the upper lids, the loss of volume causes the upper lids to sag and give a hooded appearance. In the lower lids, this weakening allows fat to protrude below the eye, creating fullness and under-eye bags. 

The excess skin of the eyelid can interfere with the eyelid function, preventing it from fully opening. The result is a decrease in the visual field where the drooping eyelids cut off the top portion of the vision. With blepharoplasty treatment, patients can remove excess skin and fat in the eyelids to address these concerns. Patients can choose to have an upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both procedures at once.

Once you are ready for your procedure, your skilled surgeon will create a small incision in the natural crease of the upper or lower eyelid. Through this incision, they will then remove and reposition fat deposits, as well as tighten the muscles in the area. Your surgeon will then close the incision and conclude treatment. 

We perform blepharoplasty as an outpatient procedure, which means you can return home within a few hours after treatment. We recommend having someone drive you home and stay with you for the initial days of your recovery so you can focus on resting.

Recovery Timeline for Blepharoplasty

After your treatment, you will likely experience some swelling, bruising, or blurry vision, but this is normal and should fade. You can apply a cold compress to your eyes to reduce swelling. We will provide you with post-care instructions on how to care for your eyes after your procedure, which may include the use of lubricating ointment, artificial tears, supplements, and oral medications.

During recovery, you should sleep with your head elevated and avoid rubbing your eyes or wearing contact lenses. It is best to refrain from strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, swimming, and running. Sun protection is recommended to aid the healing process, so you should wear dark-tinted, UV-protectant sunglasses when outdoors and protect your eyes from the wind.
