What are Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are thin plastic discs that are placed on the eyes to improve vision. Often referred to as contacts, these lenses come in an array of types to correct eyesight for patients with vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Before you get started with contact lenses or update your prescription, you will need to have an eye exam.

How Can I Benefit From Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are a popular choice for vision correction. Contact lenses improve your eyesight without altering your appearance, making them a great option for patients who desire more versatility in their style or prefer how they look without glasses. Glasses can pose many annoyances during daily wear, such as fogged-up lenses, bent frames, glare, and inconvenience while playing sports.

Some of the benefits of contact lenses include:

  • Correct nearsightedness
  • Correct farsightedness
  • Correct astigmatism
  • Correct presbyopia
  • A more natural-feeling vision correction
  • More convenient for sports

Types of Contact Lenses

Several types of contact lenses are available that cater to different needs and preferences. At Heart of Texas Eye Care, we can walk you through your options and help you choose the contacts that best suit your lifestyle and needs. We also provide laser vision correction for patients who would like to reduce their dependence on contacts and glasses.

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are flexible and typically more comfortable than hard contact lenses. The types of soft contact lenses include:

  • Daily wear: Contacts that can be worn daily but must be removed and properly cleaned daily. These lenses are not suitable for overnight use.
  • Daily disposable: Contact lenses that can be worn for one day and properly disposed of. Patients should refrain from reusing these lenses.
  • Extended-wear: These contacts can be worn for a few days and are suitable for overnight use. However, these are commonly reserved for bandage use.

Hard Contact Lenses

Hard contact lenses or Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses are contacts that hold their shape and are much more rigid than soft contacts. These lenses provide clearer vision than soft contact lenses and last longer. We typically recommend these contacts for patients with:

  • Allergies
  • Keratoconus
  • Astigmatism

Some hard contact lenses are suitable for overnight wear; however, it is important to ask your physician about the appropriate care and usage for your specific contacts.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid contact lenses have a hard center surrounded by a soft, more flexible material. These contacts are typically more comfortable than hard contact lenses and have an easier time staying in a fixed, centered position in the eye. These contacts also provide clearer vision, similar to hard contact lenses.

Who Can Have Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses may be right for you if you have refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia. It can take some time to get used to the feeling of wearing contact lenses which is a factor you may wish to consider when deciding if contacts are right for you. When wearing contacts, you should follow use and care instructions diligently.

At Heart of Texas, we provide comprehensive eye care and a variety of services to improve your vision. During an evaluation with our experienced optometrists or ophthalmologists, we’ll determine if contacts are right for you and help you find the perfect match for your eyes.
